Nominal Capacity snapshot on the Asia to North America Trade

This chart from BlueWater Reporting displays the nominal container and reefer capacity on the Asia to North America trade prior to incoming tariff enforcement beginning January 1, 2019 between the United States and China. This information was found by combining data from the BlueWater Port Dashboard and the BlueWater Reporting Terminal Analysis applications. Maersk Line leads all carriers on the Asia to North America trade with 331,269 TEUs and 26,191 reefer plugs. COSCO capacities are less, but still quite sizable operating 213,924 TEUs and 15,171 reefer plugs. Evergreen Line operates 211,860 TEUs and 23,680 reefer plugs, while ONE has 211,629 TEUs and 17,312 reefer plugs. CMA CGM (176,783 TEUs | 15,733 plugs) rounds out the Top 5 carriers in nominal capacity operating on the Asia to North America trade. These five carriers account for 1,145,465 TEUs of a total of 2,148,435 TEUs transiting the Asia to North America trade, or more than 53 percent of all nominal capacity. Combined reefer plugs for Maersk Line, COSCO, Evergreen Line, ONE, and CMA CGM equals 98,087 of 179,351 plugs in total (54.6 percent). ONE and Maersk operate 148 of the 468 total vessels on the Asia to North America trade currently, or almost 32 percent of all vessels. Traditionally, carriers experience a lull in loaded capacities following the holiday rush. It is unknown how upgraded tariffs will affect these carriers and their deployed capacities following the new year.
